Sccs-746 Tests of Random Number Generators Using Ising Model Simulations

چکیده

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations require high-quality random number generators to ensure correct results. The contrapositive of this statement is also true – the quality of random number generators can be tested by using them in large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We have tested many commonly-used random number generators with high precision Monte Carlo simulations of the 2-d Ising model using the Metropolis, SwendsenWang, and Wolff algorithms. This work is being extended to the testing of random number generators for parallel computers. The results of these tests are presented, along with recommendations for random number generators for high-performance computers, particularly for lattice Monte Carlo simulations.

Analysis of random number generators using Monte Carlo simulation

Monte Carlo simulation is one of the main applications involving the use of random number generators. It is also one of the best methods of testing the randomness properties of such generators, by comparing results of simulations using different generators with each other, or with analytic results. Here we compare the performance of some popular random number generators by high precision Monte ...

New Tests of Random Numbers for Simulations in Physical Systems

The aim of this Thesis is to present five new tests for random numbers, which are widely used e.g. in computer simulations in physics applications. The first two tests, the cluster test and the autocorrelation test, are based on analogies to the two-dimensional Ising model. The next two, the random walk test and the n-block test, are based on studies of random walks, and the condition number te...

Parallel Computations Reveal Hidden Errors of Commonly Used Random Number Generators

This paper reports that in parallel Monte-Carlo simulations of the 2D Ising-Model, commonly used pseudo-random number generators (PRNG) lead to manifestly erroneous results. When parallel random number sequences for a parallel simulation are generated by a same PRNG with diffrent initial seeds, the sequences can be strongly correlated with each other if the seeds are selected

Mission Impossible: Find a Random Pseudorandom Number Generator

In this column, we present some practical aspects about constructing a new test bench for random number sequences. The tests are based on two commonly used physical models in studies of statistical mechanics, namely the two{dimensional Ising spin model and random walks. We illustrate by a few examples the sensitivity of the tests by showing their ability to nd rather weak correlations in some c...
